John Wall, affectionately known as the "King Pin of Darts" at The Phoenix Darts Club, is instrumental in running all the darts events within the club. With the league on a Monday, Round Robin formats are played on Wednesdays (when The Portsmouth Darts League are not playing) and a monthly tournament is played on a Saturday.
During his time working with the specialist camouflage unit in The Portsmouth Dockyard, John would use up to 200 hundred litres of paint for each ship utilising the "Dazzle" camouflage paint scheme. This consists of various shades of black, white and grey in strange jarring shapes. This paint effect would confuse enemy pilots and submariners, making it hard to identify ships and confuse their calculations about the target's speed and direction.
Building Projects
Telephone House/Friendship House
John has spent much time in the construction business and personally carries out any building work that is becomes nesasary around the club. Prior to his appointment at the Club, John has worked on illustrious projects such as Telephone house in Elm Grove, Southsea, now known as Friendship House that was converted into 48 flats and the old John Brown building in Commercial Road, Portsmouth that was converted into 96 flats by The North British Housing Association.
The Samaritans
The Samaritans provide emotional support to anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope or at risk of suicide throughout Great Britain and Ireland, often through their telephone helpline. This is where John dedicated two years of his life manning these phones with a team of four colleauges based in North End, Portsmouth. Well into the night, John would reach out and help these often very distressed people. Many lives must of been helped if not saved but because of the strict code of confidentiality The Samaritans have, John will never speak of individual cases.
